Other World Computing (OWC) launched a new portable SSD model called OWC Guardian.

This product is designed to provide a data protection solution for users who need to secure sensitive information on the go. The device is compatible with Mac, iPad Pro and PC computers with USB-C ports.

At the core of the OWC Guardian is the 256-bit AES OPAL hardware encryption technology. This technology automatically encrypts data during writing and decrypts it when authorized access is granted. Since the encryption process is performed by the drive's hardware, it does not affect the performance of the computer's processor.

The OWC Guardian features a built-in color touchscreen that allows users to enter a password as a numeric PIN or passphrase for authentication. Other security features include multi-user access support, read-only mode, secure erase and a random numeric keypad layout. Using the drive does not require any software installation.

In terms of performance, the OWC Guardian has real-world read and write speeds of up to 1000 MBps, with capacity options up to 4TB. This makes the OWC Guardian capable of supporting tasks like backing up large files and editing 4K video on the fly. The drive's casing is made of anodized aluminum to aid in heat dissipation and shock protection. The device is bus-powered via the included USB-C cable.

The OWC Guardian is now available. The 1TB, 2TB and 4TB versions will retail for $219.99, $329.99 and $529.99, respectively.
