Built on the TSMC N4P process, the RNDA 4 architecture that powers the Radeon RX 9060 XT not only focuses on increasing rasterization performance but also moves towards an AI-enhanced gaming ecosystem. The heart of the Radeon RX 9060 XT is the Navi 44 GPU. With 29.7 billion transistors, Navi 44 features 2048 stream processors, 128 texture mapping units, 64 raster units, 32 third-generation Ray Tracing accelerators and 64 second-generation AI accelerators. Structurally, Navi 44 can be seen as a half-cut version of the higher-end Navi 48 GPU (RX 9070).

Despite the rasterization performance improvements, the RX 9060 XT actually does a lot more than that. The value of the Radeon RX 9060 XT goes beyond FPS (frames per second) and features like Ray Tracing, which upscales image quality using AI. According to AMD, Gen 3 Ray Tracing delivers double the real-time RT performance of the previous generation; while Gen 2 AI Acceleration delivers significantly higher performance per compute unit and supports the FP8 format, which is more efficient for FSR 4.

With a suggested retail price (MSRP) of $349 for the Radeon RX 9060 XT 16 GB version, this is a pretty attractive graphics card option. The large VRAM capacity allows the card to handle graphics tasks at high resolutions well, as well as be ready to take on new games in the future. In addition, the 16 GB VRAM version also provides a smoother and more comfortable experience, whether it is entertainment with games, graphics work, content creation, or even local AI.

AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 – FSR 4

More than just an update, AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) boasts many technological improvements over its predecessor. While FSR 3 relied heavily on interpolation algorithms and motion vector data to reconstruct and generate new frames, FSR 4 uses a completely new upscaling algorithm built on the foundation of Machine Learning (AI/ML).

The new algorithm is capable of analyzing and reconstructing images with much higher accuracy, significantly improving image quality in all settings (Performance, Balanced, Quality). More importantly, the switch to AI/ML solves many of the inherent problems of non-AI image upscaling technologies, such as shimmering on small details and ghosting behind moving objects. Tests show that FSR 4's image quality is significantly improved compared to previous versions. Especially with complex details such as vegetation, FSR even provides better upscaling quality than its competitor DLSS.

AMD FSR 4 and “Project Redstone”

The FSR 4 roadmap is divided into two main phases, the first is FSR 4 in the first half of 2025, appearing at the same time as the Radeon RX 9070 Series (March 2025), expanding support when the RX 9060 XT launches (June 2025). The focus of this phase is the implementation of a new AI/ML-based upscaler. Next, the second half of 2025 is Project Redstone – the codename for the major update, likely FSR 4.1.

Project Redstone or FSR 4.1 retains the advanced upscaler of FSR 4, while adding 3 more AI/ML-based technologies:

  • AI ML-based Frame Generation: Completely replaces FSR 3's interpolation-based frame generation method with a new AI model that combines spatial and temporal awareness to generate interlaced frames with higher accuracy and image quality, minimizing common errors.
  • AI ML-based Ray Regeneration: Similar to NVIDIA DLSS 3.5 Ray Reconstruction. This technology uses neural networks to denoise and reconstruct ray tracing data, significantly improving the image quality of Ray Tracing reflections and shadows, especially when combined with upscaling.
  • Neural Radiance Caching: A groundbreaking AI model that learns how light interacts and reflects in game scenes. By predicting and storing data about indirect lighting, the technology promises to significantly reduce the performance overhead of complex ray tracing techniques like Path Tracing.

Mafia: The Old Country

Mafia: The Old Country was officially released on August 8, 2025, based on Unreal Engine 5, using Lumen real-time global illumination technology, so the configuration requirements are relatively high. More specifically, Mafia: The Old Country has the highest configuration requirements of AMD Ryzen 7 9700X / Intel Core i7-14700K, 32 GB RAM, AMD Radeon RX 9070 / NVIDIA RTX 4070 Ti, 12 GB VRAM to run at Epic graphics quality, 4K resolution.

Mafia: The Old Country (developed by Hangar 13) is the prequel to the entire Mafia series published by 2K Games. The game is set in Sicily, Italy in the early 20th century (around 1900). This is the “Old Country” in the game’s name, the origin of the Italian mafia families before they immigrated to America. The plot of Mafia: The Old Country focuses on the origins of the Salieri crime family, one of the two main mafia families in the game Mafia: Definitive Edition. You will experience the story of the rise, the initial conflicts and how the Salieri family (along with the Morello family) established power in Sicily. The game has a linear, deep and cinematic storyline, similar to Mafia I and Mafia II, instead of a sandbox-style open world like Mafia III.

Based on Unreal Engine 5, it is almost impossible to run the game at native 4K resolution and you have to rely on the help of image quality enhancement solutions. That is why in Migovi's test, the system configuration with Radeon RX 9060 XT 16 GB completed the task well at 4K resolution, Epic settings.

FSR 4 and Mafia: The Old Country

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-14700K
  • Mainboard: ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 DARK HERO
  • RAM: CORSAIR DOMINATOR TITANIUM DDR5-6000 32 GB x 2
  • Cooler: Cooler Master MasterLiquid 360 ATMOS
  • SSD: Kingston FURY Renegade G5 2 TB
  • VGA: GIGABYTE Radeon RX 9060 XT GAMING OC 16G
  • PSU: CORSAIR RM1200x SHIFT
  • Case: Lian Li O11 DYNAMIC EVO XL Black
  • OS: Windows 11 24H2

Above is the system configuration that Migovi used to test AMD FSR 4, it can be seen that most of the components meet the highest requirements of the game, except for the graphics card. So is just Radeon RX 9060 XT 16 GB enough to experience Mafia: The Old Country at the highest quality settings?

During my entire time playing Mafia: The Old Country with this setup, Migovi did not encounter any issues or bugs when activating AMD FSR 4 and Frame Generation. This shows that AMD's investment in the AI/ML upscaler has paid off. For a game that is not focused on high-speed action, Migovi believes that achieving a frame rate of 60 FPS is enough for a complete experience.

famous-amd-fsr-4-rx-9060-xt-mafia-old-country-migovi-native-vs-performance

The image quality in the mode from Balance to Performance and Performance – High will be slightly different from Native. The details and textures in Native are the best and sharpest, while Balance and above will feel softer, some details like hair or textures on rocks will no longer be clear. That is if you strain your eyes and look closely at the screen, but if you just focus on following the game's story, the experience is almost the same. In my personal opinion, Migovi is willing to sacrifice a little bit of sharpness and small details of the graphics in exchange for higher frame rates and larger resolutions. In all tests, Migovi set the resolution to 3840 x 2160 (Native), Epic image quality, enabled AMD FSR 4, only changed the mode of FSR 4 and turned on/off the Frame Generation feature to compare the game's frame rate.

In conclusion, the world of Mafia: The Old Country looks beautiful and cinematic on a 4K monitor, with frame rates that are smooth enough to exceed 60 FPS. The jump from 19 FPS (Native) to 67 FPS (Performance) is a huge improvement, even reaching 86 FPS in the Performance – High option. Note that Frame Generation plays a huge role in the experience, for example on 4K, Epic, AMD FSR 4 Native, without Frame Generation the frame rate is 19 FPS, while with Frame Generation enabled it is 34 FPS, a 79% improvement.

Conclude

AMD's strategy with FSR 4 and the "Project Redstone" roadmap, in addition to adding features, is also a gamble on the future of AI gaming. AMD has built a comprehensive AI technology suite, including Upscaling, Frame Generation and Ray Regeneration, capable of directly confronting DLSS to level the technological playing field with its competitors. Testing AMD FSR 4 with Mafia: The Old Country has proven that in reality, when AAA games are increasingly heavy and require too high configuration, in addition to owning a powerful system, the best support for the experience is still image upgrading technology, typically FSR 4 and Frame Generation.
