Apple Final Cut Camera 2.0 is a major upgrade to the professional video recording app on the iPhone.

The new version adds ProRes RAW and genlock support for iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max and takes advantage of the Center Stage front camera system on the new iPhone line.

The iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max are the first smartphones to be capable of recording ProRes RAW with Final Cut Camera 2.0, allowing RAW data to be captured directly from the sensor for optimized post-processing. The app also supports open gate recording, which takes advantage of the entire sensor to capture a wider field of view and resolution beyond DCI 4K. This capability allows users to easily crop frames, stabilize images and set aspect ratios without losing quality.

ProRes RAW combines the flexibility of RAW data with the performance of the ProRes standard, reducing file sizes while maintaining processing speed, especially when taking advantage of the Media Engine on Apple silicon. Upcoming updates to Final Cut Pro 11.2 (Mac) and Final Cut Pro 2.3 (iPad) will support direct adjustments to parameters such as exposure, white balance, tint and demosaicing with ProRes RAW shot on iPhone.

New genlock technology allows precise syncing of iPhone 17 Pro with other cameras using the same reference signal. Genlock ensures that each frame matches perfectly, allowing for professional editing without the need for manual alignment. Apple also opened up the genlock API to third parties, which Blackmagic Design has now integrated into the ProDock Camera.

Final Cut Camera 2.0 takes advantage of the new Center Stage front camera on iPhone 17 , iPhone Air , iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max . This is the first front camera with a square sensor, providing a wider field of view and higher resolution, allowing for horizontal or vertical shooting without rotating the device.

Other new features in Final Cut Camera 2.0 include:

  • Apple Log 2 support, extended color gamut when shooting ProRes or HEVC, compatible with Log 2 LUTs on Final Cut Pro (Mac and iPad).
  • Timecode with multiple options (Time of Day, Record Run, or external source) for more precise clip management.
  • Shoot video with the 200mm telephoto camera on iPhone 17 Pro, supporting ProRes up to 4K @ 60 fps.

Final Cut Camera 2.0 will be available for free on the App Store in September 2025. The app requires iPhone Xs or later, running iOS 18.6 or later; some premium features require iOS 26 or iPhone 17 Pro.
